Step Up Your GPS Capabilities with NAVCOM Starfire On The Cheap
Sunday, December 13, 2009GPS On The Cheap-Lets Talk NAVCOM
This will be our second edition of GPS On The Cheap(first edition here), demonstrating the affordability of GPS devices for land surveyors. NAVCOM GPS has some very unique features that most don't realize. We've posted about the NAVCOM Starfire before but we are about to tell you a bit more in this post that you might not be aware of. First, NAVCOM is a John Deere Corp division that was created to support the automation of farming. Just to let you know how big that industry is the Deere Corp launched it's own satellite called STARFIRE. This satellite transmits a signal that corrects these units to a decimeter by it's self or Standalone. These units corrected by the Starfire signal is great for Farming or Agriculture, plus Mapping, GIS, and engineering planning. Also excellent for navigation for all types of machinary and equipment such as boats, tractors,ATV,actually in the Air, Land AND water -lots of applications where about a 4 inch accuracy is great. This is Standalone.
Tweaking the NAVCOM SF-2040G
Now lets tweak it up to centimeter accuracy...Surveying applications, machine control, Real time RTK with UHF radios or GSM wireless Internet correction signal. With any two of these connected together and a data collector or laptop you can get real time GPS answers. Or you can connect all 4 units together, working together to get your answers. They will link with any system you want, radios, GSM, even get more distance with the new RTK Bridge, and save lots of money. Two things that NAVCOM did that makes them a little different. One of those things was RTK EXTEND. Understanding that our worse enemy all along is canopy, or any blockage of satellites. This will degrade you data, so imagine your doing a boundary, or your on a grader and you run into a tree line. What happens? you loose LOCK, or FIXED position. RTK EXTEND actually connects to STARFIRE and grabs that data and uses it to fill in for the dropped satellites. You can stay in a Fixed solution for up to 15 mins while under canopy and keep working. How real is this for doing road work on a grader? Another feature is the processor speed, when you think of putting GPS on a moving object and also maintaining a FIXED solution. It is harder the faster you go, so how do we fix that speed up the processor.
NOTE: NAVCOM processor boards can be upgrade to 50 MHz. At 50MHz you can use in air craft. To make life really grand, everything can be upgraded in the field. So what do you think? John Deere has a pretty unique ideas about their products. Navcom now offers StarFire via Over the Air Licensing. See the new features at http://navcomtech.com

If your in the United States, we can LEASE to Own, have a Base station, two machines grader and dozier, and a guy staking out points for only $639 per month. You can view more information about the NAVCOM Starfire on our website and or download the brochures and information below. Call Skip at 843-868-1477 with any questions about this equipment and you'll be surprised at how much he knows.

Introducing The "Axemen"-Line Of Sight Superheros
Tuesday, December 8, 2009
I'm going to shift gears a little today and talk about a growing project which has been on the backburner for quite sometime, yet has finally started to come together. Let me introduce to you The Axemen. The Axemen are currently a small group of able bodied and experienced land surveyors in Charleston, SC with years of experience and the know how to get the job done. With plans to expand the Axemen into other regions of the US, the Axemen are actively looking for experienced surveyors who are handy with a bushaxe to join the network and get paid for site preparation work.Their superpower? Cutting Line. Started by my son Justin (who you may know as the creator of the highly acclaimed social network for professional land surveyors Land Surveyors United) and his partner Gavin Bowman- a local surveyor with years of hands on and fast with an axe. Gavin has put together a team of surveying superheros who are ready to show up at your next project and knock out all of the dirty work for a fraction of the cost that it would take to send out your talented instrument man to do the job. Together they have created quite a business model for a 'line of sight' business, which they offer to small surveying firms who would like to have time on their side by hiring a workhorse to cut all of the line needed to clear line of sight on a project and just show up ready to surveying. With a current combined 55+ years of experience in every geographical region and with every type of land surveying, the "Axemen" prepare a job site as though they were doing the survey themselves. Check out their affordable pricing and rates-you'll see why it pays to hire the Axemen.
